All About Yoga & Mindfulness

Last week, I attended this meditation and self care event hosted by Tzz Her Radio in collaboration with Bumble & Blogging Blk Girl and had such an amazing time that I wanted to share my experience and what I learned.

We started off with a guided meditation session led by Sarahn Says. This included focusing on relaxing, deep breathing, and letting everything go. This was very relaxing and beneficial to me because it just felt good to not think about anything or worry about anything. I probably never meditate at all so this was a really beneficial experience to me. After the meditation part, she led us into motivation talk. We started off talking about what we love about ourselves and then about our neighbors. This experience was so moving, powerful, and positive. As cheesy as it sounds, it felt good to say stuff out loud like “I am brave, I am powerful, I am fearless, I am loved” and to be praised by complete strangers. This event was honoring Black Women’s History Month and I truly felt the girl power and women empowerment in the room after doing this activity.

After meditation and positive talk, we then moved on to reflecting through journaling. I had a journal in the past but fell off on it. It felt really good to sit down in peace and to reflect on myself and what I am going through. They handed out papers that had different questions, so we can be able to reflect on and use it for the future. The first paper was a wellness wheel to reflect on a 1-10, how happy we are with certain aspects in our lives like financial, emotional, physical, spiritual, etc (see picture below). They made it into a table so that we can look back to work on areas we scored low on and to reflect on what needs to be changed. There are also questions on the bottom for us to answer in our journals to be mindful in our answers. The next two papers they gave out were more self-reflection questions. I have not done this in a while, so it felt really good to pause and reflect on certain aspects in my life. I always would reflect to myself in my head but actually writing stuff down felt good and I think it would be helpful to go back to look at it and see my progress. I felt really at peace and in my own world while journaling, even though I was in a room with many other women. This definitely will motivate me to try to journal at least once a week to truly reflect on the past week and make a goal for myself for the upcoming week.

The last thing on the agenda was the trap yoga. I never really heard of trap yoga before and I was truly a beginner in yoga, so I was pretty scared LOL. I mean I always been a fan of hip hop and trap music but with yoga? Yeah, I was confused too lol. I actually enjoyed it a lot! Yoga was pretty hard for me because I am a beginner and have no core strength or flexibility at all. The trap music made it very enjoyable and I was bouncing around trying to shake my little booty to it. When I did yoga before, it always had a calm background with music to try to me to relax but I felt like I could never relax because I did not know what I was doing and struggling with keeping the yoga stance. I always work out with music because it makes it more enjoyable, so trap music DEFINITELY help me with yoga. Moving forward, I will definitely be playing trap music.

My takeaway message is that self-care is so important. On that day, I experienced self-care in three different ways: meditation, journaling, and yoga. All three of these experiences were amazing to me and I truly feel like it will have a positive outcome for me. We are all busy people and we get so caught up with work and taking care of others, but we forget that the most important person is OURSELVES! Please remember to take a half hour or so every day to relax and reflect. If you’re not a fan of yoga, you can always take a walk or just dance around in your room to let go but also take care of your health.

For myself, I am going to make a goal to reflect in my journal at least a week to reflect on myself. I am also going to attempt to meditate and do deep breathing exercises when I am stressed out and need to relax. I will also try to do more yoga to build more strength, flexibility, as well as to relax.

    I’m going to put a note somewhere, maybe on the cover of my diary, with the words “self-care is so important”. I think it’s hard for me to put myself first sometimes and this could be encouraging??? Anyway, thank you for spreading the positivity 😊
